“ You will see an entire cityscape rise up in the intimate space of the black box”

When traveling, we would pack our luggage with personal comfort items we require daily. Upon reaching the new destination, we spend a considerable time adjusting our minds and habits to assimilate into the unfamiliar environment.

What items would we pack in our luggage if we had embarked on a holiday in an all-too familiar place that is our home? How would I sieve out and select items that would go into this luggage; for me, this bag is not a mere tool or accessory but one that contains our sentiments and secrets buried in our subconscious.

Trekking in our home city then, I imagine that we must be belabored with this baggage, shaped and informed by societal expectations and conditions; they form ‘cases’ that we are boxed in; and we are made to suit those ‘cases’ that our environment has imposed.

This performance is a way of unpacking the emotional baggage and psyche that are trapped inside the minds of city dwellers.

I will be using a tapestry of visual mediums such as puppets, body language to paint a visceral performance that is allegorical and theatrical. I like the use of imageries in theatre. A picture paints a thousand words. For example, audiences will see an entire cityscape spanning the intimate space of the black box.

My co-devisors have been working with me since 0501. This working relationship has gotten us through 0501, where we delved into themes of interpersonal relationships, to this present project (humanity in an urban jungle).

I hope the audiences could share this theatrical exploration with us with an adventurous spirit and open mind. The intimacy that our venue (Drama Centre blackbox) provides to this project would enable both performers and audiences rediscover a love for theatre that does not provide mere entertainment, but one that also engages and evokes the imagination and buried in our subconscious.
